Question about car windshield scratch vs chip?
Hello, I have a 1999 Camaro. On the far left of my windshield there appears to be a 3 inch scratch on the windshield. It's a little on the left. If I run my nail across it I can feel the scratch on the outside of the windshield, but If I go on top of the dash inside the car where the scratch is with my nail, I do not feel it. So it's on the outside.
My question is what is the difference between a chip in the windshield and just a scratch? Also could this scratch get worse and whats the worse that could happen?
A scratch is just that - a scratch. A chip is deeper, and the glass is actually chipped out or broken away - at least on the top layer. A windshield is made of two pieces of glass with a piece of plastic lamination in the middle (for safety - that is why the windshield makes the spider web effect rather than smashing out all over the place when it is broken). The worse that can happen with a scratch is that it could get deeper (if it's the wiper doing the harm, rubbing the same spot over and over), although it will never go all the way through both pieces of glass. It could get bad enough to impair your vision through that area of the windshield. Unfurtunately, a reputable glass shop will not repair a scatch on the windshield. The windshield must be replaced.
