Is there any way I can install and use a manual shift knob on an automatic vehicle?
I want one of those LED shift knobs but I have an automatic vehicle. I've only seen these for manual cars. is there any way I can get a manual shift knob and use it on my automatic car wether using an adapter or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You don't say what vehicle or whether the shift lever is column or floor mounted but here is what I think.
You probably have a floor mounted shifter, if that is the case then the current shift knob probably has some mechanical or electrical control on it. They come in several forms but the classic is a Reverse Lock Out Button that must be pressed when you select Reverse. Others include a Park Release Button that must be depressed before you can move the shifter out of Park. Another is Low Lock Out used to prevent selecting Low gear accidentally.
By removing the shift knob you disable any sort of safety device you have on the existing shifter.
In my opinion what you are suggesting is a bad idea. By disabling the safety features you could also cause the associated mechanical or electrical connection to completely disable the transmission. If you do decide to try, be careful, the newer cars have systems interlaced in such a way that there is no way to determine what will effect what.
