I think this has a lot to do with the fact that it is in the very heart of 3 continents and nearly all trade in the ancient world had to cross through so there have always been many cultures, many ideas,... It is no coinsidence that more religion then just the 3 abrahemitic ones emerged there.
What do I see in the future? I think it would be a lot easier if the western (but also arabic) superpowers would not constantly interfere and mess everything up.
