Do they make personal flotation devices so small they can fit into a pocket or pouch?
I am thinking about trying spear fishing but have only swam in the ocean a handful of times and only once away from shore. It occurred to me that maybe they make small flotation device similar to an inflatable raft only much smaller that people can carry with them? Or something along these lines? I know I sound silly but two people recently drowned here in the ocean so I want to get all the advice I can.
Couple of things you need to consider.
- the bigger the device, the more material is needed and therefore when deflated it might still be pretty large. Therefore an inflatable raft is way too big to carry on you.
- weight of deflated device when swimming. This could be a hindrance.
- how do you think you will inflate such a device out in the ocean? You would need a self inflating floatation device. It would be too difficult/long to inflate it yourself.
My suggestions
- you should be a confident swimmer and know your limitations. If you know you can only swim a certain distance, don't go further than that distance.
- go swimming with a friend.
- swim when the ocean is calm.
- use common sense
- don't panic - this alone can cause one to drown even in a few feet of water.
