Where would I get hold of maps of the UK rail network WITH the speed limits printed on?
I would like to know the speed limits of certain routes and how frequent the trains are.it doesn't necessarily have to be a map but i would like the speeds! thanks
It's very unlikely there is a simple answer to this - the timetables change twice a year, and apart from the passenger trains Network Rail has to include timetabling of freight trains.
One of my (web/PC) clients is a transport consultant that has a special interest in rail/intermodal (container on/off trains/trucks/ships) and he has some maps which show fine detail (for example, where points etc are on tracks) to assist with planning for new freight depots / signals etc. Not sure if rail companies supply them for specific jobs (eg having to extend all the platforms on a route to accommodate and 2 extra carriages on a passenger train)...
I don't think the maps have speed limits on and sometimes it will depend on the train too, I expect (because of the different lengths between wheels on freight trains/passenger trains, and how the trucks bump each other when slowing down/ going downhill).
It's a complex job to get any new trains into the schedule - there was no way to get from Anglesey to Cardiff before 10:00 if the train went to Wrexham, but via Crewe it is possible, but the Welsh minister for transport said it could be a long while to be able to do the whole trip within Wales. That's where Network Rail is involved, probably 10 times more messy now than when it was just BR running everything!
