CFL's, Motion Sensors, and Buzzing Sound. Expert advice needed...?
In the basement of my 3 family home I have a 15 amp home run coming out of the owners box, which goes into a basement ceiling light (pull chain), which I spliced into and ran a line for a flush mount light over the basement stairs, that is controlled by a motion sensor. I repeated this in one other area of the basement making for two motion sensors and 3 fixtures on this 15 amp breaker. Two fixtures have CFL's, those new compact fluorescent bulbs.
Well, when the motion sensors are set to the "on" position, everything is good, however, when I set the motion sensors to "motion", I get a buzzing from the fixture and from the electric panel/breaker, only when the lights go on. The old style bulbs don't do this, which leads me to believe it's the CFL's.
I can't use a regular switch because the tenants would leave them on all day. I'm afraid to leave it alone, and I've triple checked my connections. What should I do?
Most likely, the motion sensor is using electronic switching to control the load, instead of a simple relay. Many CFLs don't like electronic switching: that's one reason why you can't use dimmers with CFLs.
Take a look at the instructions / specifications that came with the motion detectors. You might have to stick with traditional incandescent bulbs. That won't be the worst thing in the world: with the motion detectors, they won't be on for very long.
You might also be able to find a small fluorescent bulb that uses a magnetic ballast. That might work better in this application.
