Could a static spark damage tuner circuit in TV?

When attaching an indoor antenna to coax to TV, my body had built up a charge which was subsequently released into the TV. I saw a quarter inch blue static electricity spark jump to the female COAX receiver on the back of the TV.

Could I have damaged the tuner circuit? When viewing analog material the image is terrible. But I couldn't care less about analog as it will be antiquated soon for what I use it for. TV

Only the very best of 1080i full bandwidth transmissions render a good image on the HDTV (1080p capable). Slight drop in quality broadcast results in an unwatchable tv image. Could the scaler or processor have been damaged somehow?

Possible, but unlikely, especially if you had the power cord already connected. The threaded part of the coax connector is pretty well grounded.

Your signal problems probably have more to do with your distance from the broadcast station. An indoor antenna may not be enough. 26 miles due west of Chicago, I get a decent signal using an oldschool rooftop antenna in my attic with the help of an inline amplifier. Any further away, I'd have to put something on a mast on the roof.

Here in the U.S., antennaweb.org has an online calculator that estimates what kind of antenna you need based on your zipcode. Not sure if that works in Canada or if you have something similar up there.

P.S. In addition to distance, the output power of the broadcast station plays a role. Chicago is a big market, so they've got top of the line high power transmitters.
