I went to exchange two dimmers for regular 15A switches and blew the 20A circuit, what went wrong?
I have a 20 amp circuit with 2 switches, one 600w and one 1000w. The 1000w burned out so I decided since we don't really use the dimmers to just replace them with regular switches. I'm sure I grabbed 15A from my shop and installed them. When I turned the breaker on and both switches, it blew the breaker. I removed one and replaced the 600w dimmer that was still working and left the other toggle in place where the burned out 1000w was and now it works. But I want to abandon the dimmer and just have 2 standard toggles. So did I screw up by not using 20A rated switches?
No, the 15a switch didn't have anything to do with it. Perhaps, when you first installed the switch, a ground wire was making contact with one of the screws. Try installing the switch again and be certain that the ground wire isn't touching anything
