Every since 6th grade, (now a freshman) I have been kind of semi-social. I have 3 best friends who are, well, high up on the popularity scale I guess you could say. But I'm very quiet during most of my classes &won't speak unless I'm called to answer a question (I won't ask questions when I want to). I've got a case of paranoia; and scared that I will always wind up saying something stupid and humiliate myself. And also, I live in a small town..so people like to gossip around here. I HATE stereotypes, but it's those judge mental, conceited people I'm scared to speak in front of. All in all, most label me as a prep based on the people I hang out with, the fact I dress in brand name clothes, &how I carry myself.
But I REALLY want advice on how to break out of this shell &live up to my social standards.
I don't think you should try to be outgoing and social just to 'live up to your social standards', necessarily. I think you should change because you want to meet new people, make new friends, be more self-assertive, not just to fit in with all the rest of your friends. First, you have to be more self-confident. Okay, so maybe people will talk about you in a mean way, but in the long run, that doesn't matter, does it? And trust me, you probably won't say anything that'll humiliate you -- it's just paranoia. And if you do -- well, it's life. Stuff happens. You can't hide from it. I think you should start off by answering questions in class when you want to, and join into class discussions. I'm like you -- I'm pretty shy, quiet, etc. But whenever I join in with the class, I feel much more relaxed and I'm starting to lose that fear. It's all about easing your way into it. But first -- self-confidence. When people see that you're proud of yourself, a relatively cheerful person, and not afraid to raise your hand and put your words out there people will automatically want to to talk you. And it keeps gettng easier. Good luck and keep smiling!
