format? What gives? It looks good enough but only fills up the middle of my screen, even Sony's auto and 'smart' Bravia 2 engine modes don't make the pic fit the screen. Where are US stations on widescreen HD conversion and is this to do w. PAL/NSTC?
In order to be in HD ALL the paths the program travels on must be HD. I suspect (my best guess as to what is happening) is that ABC is feeding the BBC the broadcast in true HD, but the BBC records it for later broadcast and that recording unit is not HD.
HD recorders are VERY expensive and a lot a old recorders still exist.
Although most (almost all) HD programs are in the 16;9 broadcast ratio, a 4:3 broadcast can be HD, NOT likely but possible. The broadcast ratio does not make a HD broadcast
I live in Kansas U.S.A. and ABC is HD unless the local station puts a overlay (Character Generated information) on the screen (Weather information) the overlay machine is not HD so the HD broadcast reverts to SD (standard definition) when the overlay is on. The local station can pass the ABC signal in HD, but not if they need to modify it in any way. The local station has yet to fully invest in HD equipment. It is VERY expensive. The BBC probably has the same problem not all equipment is HD. *(YET)*
