Which brand is best depends on a lot of things. It depends where you are - as to which maps are available. Smaller countries are more likely to only be supported by the bigger manufacturers.
It also depends which extras you want - such as extra voices, bluetooth, mp3 playing, etc.
Garmin, Navman, Tomtom are all good brands, and have maps for most countries.
One thing to ask about is map updates. There is nothing more frustrating than keep getting incorrect instructions because the map is incorrect - yet the company wants half the cost of the GPS again to update the maps.
