What type of woods are used to make stretcher bars for paintings?
Hey I was wondering if anyone knows the types of wood that are used to make the heavier duty stretcher bars for paintings? I was thinking about making my own but would like to figure if that would just cost more.

I would suggest a bit more research beyond the first answer because pine is notorious for exuding resin and stretchers are not normally finished to block the resin. I think looking at sources like Dick Blick and noting the material used (ash?) for a straight grain and finely grained wood that won't warp. Also, if making your own, you have to learn how much wider the boards have to be for bigger canvases and at what length you have to put in an additional cross brace to keep the stretched canvas from bowing the pieces in the middle.
Good quality wood is not cheap and you will be buying a few pieces and putting an hour or more into cutting corners, etc., for each frame while people selling pairs of side rails for you to assemble will be buying in bulk at lower prices and doing high speed cutting.
