I have tried the gentle leader (the one that goes around the nose and neck) He has snapped the plastic hook trying to go towards other dogs. I have even tried a choke chain and it does NOT phase him. I want to take him for more walks and with me to the lake but cant because of his behavior. He is a Lab /pointer mix that I picked up from the pound.
I have an English Setter w/ the same EXACT problem. What I did was use a prong collar Don't worry they dont hurt the dog.
I taught her to walk in heel. Put the collar on, put your dog in sit then start walking. When he pulls, turn abruptly in the opposite direction and give a correction. A correction is a fast tug. Don't pull, or drag him, that defeats the purpose of the prong collar.
The prong collar corrects the dog in the most natural way. Dogs bite the neck and chest when others are out line, the prong collar mimics that.
When you give the correction remind him "heel". Keep walking, turn again when he starts to pull and repeat the command. I taught a husky in 10 minutes to walk in heel! This is a great, fast and easy method.
Another thing to work on w/ him is "focus". Focus is getting him to refocus his attention on you. Take a treat and hold it infront of your face while your dog is in sit and repeat focus - over and over and over and over.
So now... when you're walking in heel he won't pull. When he sees another dog and starts getting upset you say "focus" and take his attention off the dog and onto you. Once its on you reward him. Dogs live in the moment and w/o the constant stimulus of the other dog he should relax and you can continue on your walk.
